Applying for Reception
Starting Reception
We would like to introduce you to a new website that has been set up by the government to aid all families with children starting reception.
Our ‘Starting Reception’ definition* sets out the personal, social, emotional and physical skills that most children will develop by the time they start school.
The definition has been created to help parents, caregivers, and the early years professionals involved in looking after young children get them ready to start school.
We encourage all parents and any organisations working with children and families across the UK to use this definition in their work so all children start school ready for their first day.
*We are calling this document the ‘Starting Reception’ definition. Some people/organisations refer to this as ‘school readiness’
The https://beststartinlife.gov.uk/ Website is a helpful tool to all parents of children from before birth right up to Reception age.
"Best Start in Life" (BSiL) refers to a UK government strategy and associated family services focused on improving early childhood development (0-5 years) through integrated health, education, and parenting support via local Family Hubs, aiming to boost cognitive skills, well-being, and future life chances, with a new national online portal for parents. Key areas include nutrition, oral health, bonding, executive function development (self-control, memory, flexibility), and connecting families with local childcare and support services."
