History 3I’s
Intent:
At Crownfield Infant and Nursery School, we have designed our History curriculum to ensure we help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of not only our past, but that of the wider world. Within our lessons, we aim to enable children to ask insightful questions, think critically, analyse evidence and develop their own perspectives. We deliver a curriculum that:
- Stimulates curiosity, interest and awareness of the past and how it is different from the present.
- Support each individuals understanding of what happened in the past, and how it can affect our future.
- Enables children to develop a sense of identity and where they belong in time.
- Help children make thoughtful and competent judgements.
- Establishes a sense of chronology, within and beyond living memory; about change, cause and consequence.
Implementation:
The programmes of study are addressed through the National Curriculum 2014. They are taught through units and topics in KS1 and embedded in the curriculum, using cross-curricular links. In EYFS, we follow the Development Matters document, and specifically the Understanding the World goals; ensuring that progression in History starts from Nursery and will guide them into KS2.
Teachers ensure that the historical activities they have planned, allow for opportunities to research, investigate sources and carry out their own conclusions. The children are encouraged to explore a wide range of sources, including written, visual and oral. Each year group sets out their own topics for the year, and the history lead ensures that their aims match the National Curriculum 2014. Direct teaching of history occurs within three half terms throughout the academic year. The other terms, focuses on Geography and explores History in a cross-curricular context. There is always a standard of promoting a positive attitude towards History, whether this in explicit lessons or through cross-curricular links.
High quality visits and visitors to the school, enrich the curriculum and provide opportunities for writing with a purpose. Examples of these have been; a trip to Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, a look at our local area and its history, and visitors from creative workshops.
The History lead is given training and the opportunity to develop their own subject knowledge, skills and understanding, to support each teacher in their planning. Teachers will assess their own classes’ progress and attainment, throughout the academic year.
Impact:
Designing the History curriculum in such a way, ensures that each individual's needs can be met within this environment of high quality first wave teaching; support by targeted interventions where appropriate. Creating a stimulating environment, ensures children enjoy the curriculum and this promotes achievement and confidence in this subject. Each teacher is dedicated to reflecting the teaching of their topics via their working walls and displays throughout the school; promoting a sense of purpose and enjoyment to the children’s work. The high quality of visits and visitors, promotes a sense of excitement around History and develops the opportunities for purposeful writing.
